Sad. There’s something practical and romantic about train travel.

When my husband and I were in DC, we loved the Metro — hop on and get anywhere you want to go! Need to switch to a bus? No problem! Everyone was very helpful. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to do that anywhere in Michigan? Unfortunately, it will probably never happen either.

I was amazed at how many people were waiting to catch a train last Sunday in Penn Station. Most were traveling up or down the coast. For example, there is a high-speed express running from New York to Washington DC. All the trains we were on were full. They were also mostly on time. We arrived in NYC exactly on time. Coming home, we were an hour late getting to Toledo. However, it would take some bucks to rebuild the passenger rail infrastructure in this country to a level where it could seriously compete with air and car. Trains are big on the East Coast. Last year I looked into taking the train to Berkley for a conference and found out I couldn't afford a sleeper berth either. (It would have actually been cheaper to fly.) Maybe the high gas prices will make train travel more popular again -- and cheaper? How cool that you went by train!
