A couple weeks ago, it was rumored that General Motors might sell one or more of its divisions — possibly including Buick — in order to survive. Given my family’s history, I found this disheartening.
But the corporation came up with a different plan. It is keeping Buick, but canceling my mother’s health insurance coverage at the end of the year (along with that of all other salaried retirees 65 and older). GM announced the plan on Tuesday, and Mom received a confirmation letter from the company today.
Tomorrow, a weekend-long celebration of GM’s 100th anniversary starts in Flint.

I cannot even believe anybody’s “celebrating” GM’s 100th anniversary. There should be a funeral, and everybody there should curse the corpse. I’m so sorry about your mother. What will she do???

All of the 65-plus retirees are eligible for Medicare, and GM is kicking in an extra $300 a month to their pensions. So the idea is, they can get Medicare and some sort of supplemental coverage. Or just pay costs beyond Medicare out of pocket with the extra money. How this works out will probably depend on a person’s health. I think Mom may break even, but she does take a couple of expensive medications. So I’m not sure. Also, GM reserves the right to cut out the extra money at any time.
